Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka - where jungle, ruins and reef share the same island

Sri Lanka is small enough to cross in a day, but varied enough to keep you busy for weeks. Ancient rock fortresses, mist-covered tea estates, leopard-filled national parks and long stretches of southern coastline. The train from Kandy to Ella alone is worth the trip: four hours through cloud forest and tea plantations, with the window open and nowhere urgent to be.

You will love Sri Lanka if:

  • You like your trips to have real variety: a few days in the hill country, a night near the ruins, a safari at dawn, then two days on the beach
  • You like to travel without a fixed plan:  a temple ceremony you stumbled into, a herd of elephants crossing the road at dusk, a family who invited you in for rice and curry.
  • You take the scenic route whenever possible: the Kandy to Ella train ride is one of the most beautiful in the world.

Why Sri Lanka?

Everything you want from a trip. On a single island.

Sri Lanka is roughly the size of Ireland. In ten days you can go from a UNESCO-listed ancient city to a tea plantation in the central highlands to a beach on the south coast to a national park where elephants cross the road in front of your jeep.

And then there's the food. Rice and curry for breakfast, which sounds like a lot until you've had it and then it sounds like the only reasonable way to start a day. Hoppers, bowl-shaped pancakes, eaten with coconut sambol and a fried egg in the middle. Kottu roti, chopped and fried on a griddle so loud you can hear the restaurant from down the street.

Ancient cities that most people haven't heard of

Sigiriya is a 5th-century palace built on top of a 200-metre volcanic rock rising from the jungle. It's one of the most extraordinary things you will see anywhere,  and it's still quiet enough that you can stand at the top without fighting for space.

Wildlife without the long-haul safari.

Yala National Park has one of the highest leopard densities in the world. Elephant sightings in Minneriya are almost guaranteed. Blue whales feed off the south coast from November to April.

Two coasts, almost year-round sun.

The west and south coast are best December - April. The east coast flips: dry and beautiful May–September. There's almost always somewhere in Sri Lanka that's in season.

The price

Boutique hotels in tea plantations, safaris at dawn, world-class food and ancient cities that would be overrun and overpriced anywhere else in the world. Sri Lanka delivers all of it at a fraction of what it would cost in the Maldives or Southeast Asia's more established destinations.

When to go?

Sri Lanka has two monsoon seasons that hit different parts of the island at different times. The short version: west and south coast are best December–April. East coast is best May–September. The Cultural Triangle and Hill Country are good almost year-round.

December – April

West & South Coast

Dry, sunny, calm seas. The best conditions for the classic itinerary — Sigiriya, Kandy, Ella, Yala and the south coast all in good weather. Blue whale watching from Mirissa. The most popular season — book ahead.

   Our recommendation ★

May – September

East Coast season

The southwest monsoon brings rain to the west and south. The east coast flips to dry and beautiful. Trincomalee and Arugam Bay at their best. The Cultural Triangle is still fine. A good time if you want the east coast or are flexible on the beach.

Good · east coast focus

November

The quiet season

Crowds are thin, prices are lower, and the weather is genuinely unpredictable: you might get a perfect week, you might get rain. Worth considering if the budget matters and you're flexible about what the days look like.
