Where do you want to go?
Every region of Romania has a 'sweet spot': a specific month or a hidden guesthouse that makes the trip. Whether you're looking for the vibrant green of a Transylvanian spring or the quiet, snowy magic of Bucovina in December, we know exactly where the best of our country is hiding right now.
Bucovina
Painted monasteries sitting in the hills since the 15th century, their frescoes still vivid after five hundred years. One of Romania's most extraordinary regions.
MaramureÈ™
Wooden churches, hay carts and a way of life that has changed less than almost anywhere in Europe. The most authentic corner of Romania.
Sibiu
Cobblestone squares, coloured houses and a cultural scene that punches above its size. One of the most beautiful towns in Central Europe.
Mamaia
Romania's most popular beach resort — a long sandy beach between the Black Sea and Lake Siutghiol, at full capacity in July, much quieter in September.
Danube Delta
Europe's second largest river delta. Canals, reed beds, pelicans and a silence that's genuinely difficult to find anywhere else on the continent.
Cluj-Napoca
The most liveable city in Romania. Good coffee, good food, a central square worth a long evening. The best base for Transylvania.
Brașov
A Saxon medieval town at the foot of the Carpathians — Bran Castle nearby, ski slopes in Poiana BraÈ™ov above, one of the most atmospheric old towns in Romania.

Worth it vs overhyped?
Honest local knowledge — the places that live up to the reputation and the ones that don't.
Worth every kilometre
- Painted monasteries of Bucovina. Genuinely extraordinary and almost entirely un-touristy. The blue of VoroneÈ› has been studied by art historians for centuries.
- Transfăgărășan road (July–September), as spectacular as the photos. The road over the Carpathians at 2,042m with a glacial lake at the top.
- Danube Delta - Europe's last great wilderness.
- Salina Turda salt mine. A 17th century salt mine turned into one of the strangest and most beautiful underground spaces in Europe.
Temper expectations
- Bran Castle ("Dracula's Castle"). A nice medieval castle and museum, but not scary and not actually Dracula's residence. Worth 2 hours, not a special trip.
- Mamaia in July and August. Excellent beach, but extremely crowded. Go in June or September for the same water with half the people.
- Sinaia — PeleÈ™ Castle is genuinely beautiful, but the town itself is underdeveloped. A good stop on the way to BraÈ™ov, not a destination in itself.
