Italy

Discover Italy, the creators of renaissance, pasta and dolce far niente

Italy was unified as a single country only in 1871 and in many ways, it still isn't quite. The north is alpine, butter-rich and closer in spirit to Austria. The south is sun-scorched, Greek in its ancient root. Rome has been continuously inhabited for over 250 years, and you can unfold its layers just by exploring it.

You'll love Italy if:

  • Food is the reason you book the flight: Cacio e pepe in a Roman trattoria, handmade tortellini in brodo in Bologna, risotto alla Milanese, a Neapolitan margherita with buffalo mozzarella still warm, cannoli in a Palermo street market.
  • You respect places that take their traditions seriously: Italians don't do fusion for the sake of it. Recipes are passed down like heirlooms and regional pride is deeply, genuinely felt.
  • Art and history are big parts of your itinerary: Michelangelo's Sistine Chapel, Pompeii frozen under volcanic ash, Venetian Gothic palaces sinking into the lagoon.

Unskippable Italian Destinations

Italy has 20 regions; most of them could fill a trip on their own. We've chosen the destinations that best capture the country's diversity, from the north to the islands. Take your time and find the ones that call to you.

Rome

Don't miss out on the Colosseum, the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain, but also don't forget the neighbourhood trattorias, the Sunday markets, the piazzas where locals sit and do nothing in particular.

Venice

The UNESCO World Heritage site built on 118 small islands connected by over 400 bridges. Have you ever been floating on canal?

Florence

An elegant and elevated slice of Italy. Enjoy the Brunelleschi's dome, Michelangelo's David, and some of the best bistecca you'll eat anywhere. This place holds roughly half of Italy's most significant art treasures.

Milan

Italy's most forward-looking city, where fashion week shuts down the streets twice a year and a Leonardo da Vinci painting quietly hangs in a convent wall.

Amalfi Coast

Pastel villages clinging to vertical cliffs above turquoise water. It's as dramatic as it looks, and the limoncello is better than expected.

Naples

Naples is Italy with the volume turned all the way up. It is a city of glorious contradictions: crumbling Baroque palaces stand next to vibrant street art, and narrow, laundry-lined alleys open up into grand piazzas.

Sardinia

An island with its own ancient language, traditions and perhaps the clearest water in the Mediterranean. Less visited than Sicily, yet clearly worth seeing.

Why Greece?

Piacere di conoscerti, cara Italia!

Few countries in the world stir the soul quite like Italy. Our boot-shaped peninsula packs a staggering variety of landscapes, cultures, and experiences into one destination. Travelling across Italy can feel like moving between entirely different worlds: the alpine grandeur of South Tyrol gives way to the Renaissance splendour of Florence, which gives way to the volcanic drama of Naples and the Amalfi Coast. A country defined by  art, architecture, philosophy and food.

Ah yes, the food! Each city and region is known for something different, from Roman carbonara and Neapolitan pizza to Ligurian pesto and Venetian squid ink risotto. Pair that with world-class wine, the ritual of aperitivo at dusk, and a café culture that treats the daily espresso as a near-sacred act.

When to visit

Best time to visit Italy would be late May to early June, or mid-September to early October. These months offer pleasant weather, manageable crowds and lower prices. July and August are gorgeous but packed, expensive, and extremely hot.

How to get around

Italy's rail system is cheap, fast and generally reliable,  and Italo trains connecting the major cities.  If you plan to explore rural Tuscany, the Dolomites or Puglia's backroads, renting a car is worth it, but avoid driving in city centres entirely, as ZTL restricted zones can result in fines of €100.

About coffee

Remember: cappuccino is a breakfast drink only. Also, standing at the bar to drink your espresso is both cheaper and more authentically Italian than sitting at a table, where a service charge often applies.

Practical tips

Major attractions book out weeks in advance, so treat them like concert tickets and reserve early. Always carry some cash, as public toilets often cost between €0.50 and €1. Also, Italy's tap water is safe and delicious in most cities, so bring a reusable water bottle.
