Albania
Discover Albania: Europe's best kept secret is out.
Albania is what happens when a country has extraordinary beaches, ancient cities, dramatic mountains and genuinely good food. The water on the Albanian Riviera is the same turquoise as Greece. The old towns of Berat and Gjirokastër are UNESCO-listed and largely uncrowded. Tirana is louder and more colourful than you expect. All of it is significantly more affordable than anywhere comparable in the region.
You will love Albania if:
- You're friendly: If you get lost or hungry in a rural village, don’t be surprised if a family practically pulls you into their home, pours you a glass of homemade raki (grape brandy), and sets a table full of fresh cheese, honey, and bread for free.
- You love the beach: The Albanian Riviera has water so clear and turquoise you’d swear you were in the Maldives or Greece. You can have a fresh seafood dinner and a beer right on the sand for the price of a coffee in London or Paris.
Popular Destinations in Albania
From the capital to the coast, from Ottoman old towns to turquoise bays, Albania fits more variety into a small country than most destinations manage in a much larger one.
Tirana
Louder and more colourful than you expect. Good coffee, good food and a city that's clearly enjoying its own reinvention.
Saranda & Ksamil
The southern tip of the Albanian Riviera. Small islands you can swim to, turquoise water and a UNESCO site down the road. A place that will definetely surprise you.
The Albanian Riviera
Steep cliffs, hidden coves and beaches that appear around corners with no warning. The coastal road alone is worth the trip.
Berat
A UNESCO-listed Ottoman town built on a hillside, known as the city of a thousand windows. One of the most atmospheric places in the Balkans and definetely worth adding to your list.
Gjirokastër
A stone city in the mountains, grey and ancient, with a castle above it and cobblestone streets steep enough to function as staircases.

What to know?
The Albanian Riviera
The Riviera runs from Vlorë in the north to Saranda in the south, about 150 kilometres of coastline. The road is winding and dramatic. The beaches range from long sandy stretches to small pebble coves accessible only by boat or a steep path down a cliff. The water is clear,
warm from June to October,
and noticeably less crowded than comparable stretches of Greek or Croatian coast.
A car is the best way to explore it properly. Public transport exists but is infrequent. If you want to stop when something looks interesting, and things will look interesting regularly, you need to be driving.
When to go?
May – June
Sweet Spot
The best time to visit. Warm enough to swim, not yet at peak summer heat. The Riviera is busy but not overcrowded. Prices are lower than July and August. Tirana and the historic towns are at their most pleasant.
Our recommendation ★
July – August
Peak season
Hot, busy, energetic. The Riviera is at its most alive — beach bars, boat trips, evenings that go on longer than planned. The most popular time, with prices to match. Worth it if you don't mind the crowds.

September – October
Second best
The sea is still warm from the summer, the crowds have thinned and the light on the old towns is extraordinary. One of the best times to combine beach and culture. Fewer tourists in Berat and Gjirokastër than at any other time of year.
Excellent · quieter
