The Albanian Riviera

The Riviera runs from Vlorë in the north to Saranda in the south, about 150 kilometres of coastline. The road is winding and dramatic. The beaches range from long sandy stretches to small pebble coves accessible only by boat or a steep path down a cliff. The water is clear, warm from June to October, and noticeably less crowded than comparable stretches of Greek or Croatian coast.

A car is the best way to explore it properly. Public transport exists but is infrequent. If you want to stop when something looks interesting, and things will look interesting regularly, you need to be driving.

Sweet Spot

The best time to visit. Warm enough to swim, not yet at peak summer heat. The Riviera is busy but not overcrowded. Prices are lower than July and August. Tirana and the historic towns are at their most pleasant.

July – August

Peak season

Hot, busy, energetic. The Riviera is at its most alive — beach bars, boat trips, evenings that go on longer than planned. The most popular time, with prices to match. Worth it if you don't mind the crowds.



September – October

Second best

The sea is still warm from the summer, the crowds have thinned and the light on the old towns is extraordinary. One of the best times to combine beach and culture. Fewer tourists in Berat and Gjirokastër than at any other time of year.
